Stupid hur'can

I'm curious about the effect that media has played in the emotional investment people have with catastrophe.
Please play along with me.

Tell me:
1. On a scale of 1 to 5 how would you compare Hurricane Katrina's degree of devestation to the Indian Ocean Tsunami, 1 being not at all similar and 5 being very similar.

2. What is your primary source for news and information? Television, Internet (which sites/feeds), radio, or print media?

Has to be a 1,ok maybe a 2,but really its not like the government is going to have to go pleading to other countries to help rebuild. The only reason the west was so quick to act with the Tsunami was becuase of international trade.Yes,I'm cynical.

Most of my news comes from the BBC and The Guardian, sorry but I still trust the British media over others.

It doesn't make sense TO compare one to the other. A human tragedy is a tragedy no matter what. Loss of life/surroundings to natural disasters (or any other cause) can't BE measured- much less compared.

Regarding emotional investment, how can any human not have compassion for those who've lost everything, no matter WHERE they're from? I do think ALL media sources tend to put their own bias to every story- this one is no different in that respect.

1. 2
2. CBC News feeds, CanWest newspapers/online news, Globe & Mail

As my roommate pointed out today, it's terrible, and awful, but it couldn't have happened in a better place. The richest country in the world - they have more resources to deal with it than probably anywhere else. Though I am curious to see how it pans out. Unfortunately, I predict that helping low-income, non-white people will not be as much of a priority as if they were higher-income, and white. We'll see.
